Event Description

TATRC Symposium

Innovative New Technologies to Identify and Treat Traumatic Brain Injuries:
Crossover Technologies and Approaches between Military and Civilian Applications
Wednesday, September 23, 2009
1:00pm - 5:00pm
Organized by United States Army Medical Research & Materiel Command, Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC)

**Registration Required**

This half-day forum will provide a unique opportunity for leaders from disparate organizations involved in mental health telemedicine and related disciplines to convene, learn from each other, and explore opportunities to collaborate on new partnership models. The meeting will help TATRC identify opportunities to expand strategic operations and form new alliances.

Participation and attendance will come from a group of leaders in telemental health, telemedicine technology, emerging wireless and consumer-based as well as clinically based application developers who will be joined by military and civilian representatives.

There is a critical need to assess and treat Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). However, the nature of TBI together with shortages of TBI specialists and the dispersed pattern of TBI patients are challenges for traditional medicine in identifying and treating patients. Severe TBI frequently occurs with other traumatic injuries that can complicate emergency treatment, recovery, and rehabilitation. Mild and moderate cases of TBI, particularly for those patients where the head is not penetrated, may not be immediately identified. Finally, if symptoms are subtle and occur in isolation as in a remote region, the patient may not be aware of any brain problems.

Telemedicine technologies can play an important role to meet these challenges:

* Identify concussion and mild TBI by using electronic cognitive assessment systems
* Provide information so that clinical teams are able to collaborate on TBI care
* Provide teletherapy and encouragement for patients with TBI receiving long term rehabilitation services
* Provide real-time video visits with family members
* Provide video nursing supervision of patients with TBI in their home
* Manage medication and provide for an online response system
* Provide cognitive therapy, speech, and physical therapy in distance or rural areas
* Provide interactive video programs and web courses to train medics, physician assistants, nurses, and other providers in civilian and military settings
