Silicon Valley.
Come and test your knowledge. I have seen this talk and I assure you -
even seasoned Silicon Valley veterans will find this story interesting. Silicon Valley entrepreneur Steve Blank will talk about how World War II set the stage for the creation and explosive growth of Silicon Valley, and the role of Frederick Terman and Stanford in working with government agencies
(including the CIA and the
National Security Agency) to set up companies in this area that sparked the creation of hundreds of other enterprises.

Speaker: Steve Blank
Steve Blank spent nearly 30 years as founder and executive of high
tech companies in Silicon Valley,
most recently the enterprise software firm E.piphany. He has been
involved in or co-founded eight
Silicon Valley startups, ranging from semiconductors to video games,
and personal computers to
supercomputers. He teaches entrepreneurship at U.C. Berkeley's Haas
School of Business,
Columbia University and Stanford's Graduate School of Engineering. Omnyx LLC will be owned 50-50 by GE and UPMC in the first such ownership deal with an academic research institution. Forming Omnyx fits in with GE's push to find new ways to commercialize research from GE's development center, which helped create the system. The system makes images small enough to store and transmit. Omnyx hopes to tap what it sees as a $2 billion market over the next several years. The device scans slides in 30 to 40 seconds and allows the image to be viewed by multiple doctors simultaneously, saving time and avoiding errors. Omnyx must get U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for the system.

Bloomberg, http://www.bloomberg.com/intro3.html Tech Transfer(T2): UCSB - Collaborative Research From Bench to Boardroom tag:medtechiq.ning.com,2008-08-24:2140535:Video:2590 2008-08-24T16:07:29.262Z CC-Conrad Clyburn-MedForeSight http://medtechiq.ning.com/profile/CCatMedTechIQ

UCTV describes the important role of corporate collaborations at UCSB.
