SUMMARY:Best Practice When Assessing Social Communication with High Fu
 nctioning Autism Spectrum Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday December 7, 2018 Time: 10:00 AM PST | 01:00 P
M EST\nOverview:\nThis presentation will offer participants a variety
of tools to help evaluate the social-pragmatic communicative features
of High Functioning Autism Spectrum to acquire more relevant informati
on with which to develop intervention strategies.\nWhy should you Atte
nd: It is well known that individuals with High Functioning Autism Spe
ctrum have deficits in social-communication skills. Engaging in one-si
ded conversational topics that hold little interest to others, a tende
ncy towards hyper-literalism, an inability to understand idiomatic and
abstract language are often present. Vocal tone may be flat and monot
onous or may come across as condescending or outright oppositional. Ad
d to this problem, the individual may have poor facial expressions whi
ch further serve to negatively impact how others perceive them sociall
y.\nReading nonverbal language is often a weak skill for individuals w
ith High Functioning Autism Spectrum. What many people fail to realize
is how significant a role this skill plays in social situations. When
was the last time you told someone you didn't want to listen to their
conversation anymore? Did you ever state to someone you find his/her
topic interesting? Likely you did not. Instead people use subtle body
movements and facial expressions to signal approval and disapproval. W
e \"read\"these messages and alter our social interaction accordingly.
\nBut what happens if you fail to attend to these messages. People wil
l continue to use these techniques without success and eventually beco
me overwhelmed and frustrated. That's when problems really happen beca
use they likely will express their extreme displease to the individual
and/or avoid them at all costs.\n\n\nAreas Covered in the Session:\nH
