SUMMARY:Federal Requirements for Interoperability - New Directions for
  EHRs, Patient and Provider Data
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nIn March 2019, the Department of Health and Hum
an Services issued proposed rules to give providers and patients acces
s to the electronic data stored in EHRs and health plans.\nThese rules
require specific technology (APIs using the HL7 Fast Healthcare Inter
operability Resources, or FHIR) to be built into all EHRs for provider
 s. Using this technology, vendors can build applications to access EHR
s from providers and get specific clinical data for use by other provi
ders and by patients.\nProposed rules also require certain Medicare, M
edicaid, and Exchange health plans to implement this same technology a
nd make claims data available to patients. This should enable individu
als to build their own Personal Health Records and share them with pro
viders and caregivers.\nThe aim is to improve the coordination of care
among providers, increase the quality of care for patients, and give
patients more control of their own data. As well, the rules prohibit i
nformation blocking by vendors. All of this will require major changes
to vendor products, providers business operations, and health plans.
This webinar will provide specific details as to the requirements for
vendors, providers, and health plans.\nNOTE: Comment Deadline EXTENDED
. This webinar is now even more timely! The U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS) announced it is extending the public comment
period by 30 days for two proposed regulations aimed at promoting the
interoperability of health information technology (health IT) and enab
ling patients to electronically access their health information. The n
ew deadline for the submission of comments - June 3, 2019 - will allow
additional time for the public to review the proposed regulations.\nW
hy should you Attend: New Federal requirements will mean major upgrade
s and changes to EHRs, physician practices, hospital operations, and h
ealth plan data exchange.\nProposed rules issued in March specify spec
ific technology and data requirements for the exchange of electronic i
nformation.\nProviders must work closely with their EHR vendors to ass
ure they meet these new requirements or face penalties and reductions
in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements.\nAreas Covered in the Session
