SUMMARY:Hypothesis Testing, P-values and Inference: When Thinking like
  a Statistician Makes Sense
DESCRIPTION:This clinical research webinar will explore the reasoning
that formulates null hypotheses and turns researchers’ hair gray. At
tendees will learn the why and how of the scientific method and how to
view the world with a statistician’s eyes. Also attendees will lear
n the possibilities and limitations of research questions and hypothes
is development, how to interpret statistical findings with p-values, e
ffect sizes, and confidence intervals.\nWhy Should You Attend:\nDo you
become tongue tied when explaining the meaning of a p-value? Would yo
u like to know why the null hypothesis is so important to research? Wh
y don’t studies prove anything? Are your pretty sure about what you
want to say in plain English, but you’re not sure how to say it stat
istically?\nThis webinar will briefly review the history of scientific
method. We will explore the steps involved in developing a research q
uestion that can be tested with statistical hypotheses. Examples of re
search questions and hypotheses that can and cannot be tested will be
presented. A brief lesson in statistical theory will explain why we do
n’t prove anything in research, we can only make really, really, goo
d guesses…providing we look at the problem the right way. We will al
so discuss three ways of interpretation that in combination can be use
d for better decision making, namely, p-values, effect sizes, and conf
idence intervals.\n\nLearning Objective:\nAt the end of the webinar, p
articipants will have a more thorough understanding of using the tenan
ts and tools of scientific method to align their studies to obtain val
id and reliable results.\n\nAreas Covered in the Webinar:\n\nBrief his
tory of the scientific method\nExamples of when scientific methods is
useful, and when it is not are not.\n5 steps for hypothesis testing:\n
Formulation of research questions and statistical hypotheses to explai
 n and/or test phenomena.\nSpecify the statistical hypotheses\nChoice o
f an appropriate test-statistic\nCompute probability and determine if
results are significant\nProperly state conclusions and make inference
s based on the test results\n\n\nWhy p-values are not enough. A review
of effect sized and confidence intervals.\nSuggestions for the best t
ests to use to address specific types research, and how to structure t
he study research questions accordingly:\nTests of mean differences\nT
 ests of correlation/association\n\n\nWho Will Benefit:\n\nResearchers\
 nPrincipal Investigators\nCoordinators\nIndustry Sponsors\nIRB members
