SUMMARY:TATRC Symposium @ ATA Mid-Year 2009: Innovative New Technologi
es to Identify and Treat Traumatic Brain Injuries ... Crossover Techno
logies and Approaches between Military and Civilian Applications
DESCRIPTION:TATRC Symposium\n\nInnovative New Technologies to Identify
and Treat Traumatic Brain Injuries:\nCrossover Technologies and Appro
aches between Military and Civilian Applications\nWednesday, September
23, 2009\n1:00pm - 5:00pm\nOrganized by United States Army Medical Re
search & Materiel Command, Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research
  Center (TATRC)\n\n**Registration Required**\n\nThis half-day forum wi
ll provide a unique opportunity for leaders from disparate organizatio
ns involved in mental health telemedicine and related disciplines to c
onvene, learn from each other, and explore opportunities to collaborat
e on new partnership models. The meeting will help TATRC identify oppo
rtunities to expand strategic operations and form new alliances.\n\nPa
rticipation and attendance will come from a group of leaders in teleme
ntal health, telemedicine technology, emerging wireless and consumer-b
ased as well as clinically based application developers who will be jo
ined by military and civilian representatives.\n\nThere is a critical
need to assess and treat Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). However, the
nature of TBI together with shortages of TBI specialists and the dispe
rsed pattern of TBI patients are challenges for traditional medicine i
n identifying and treating patients. Severe TBI frequently occurs with
other traumatic injuries that can complicate emergency treatment, rec
overy, and rehabilitation. Mild and moderate cases of TBI, particularl
y for those patients where the head is not penetrated, may not be imme
diately identified. Finally, if symptoms are subtle and occur in isola
tion as in a remote region, the patient may not be aware of any brain
problems.\n\nTelemedicine technologies can play an important role to m
eet these challenges:\n\n* Identify concussion and mild TBI by using e
lectronic cognitive assessment systems\n* Provide information so that
clinical teams are able to collaborate on TBI care\n* Provide telether
apy and encouragement for patients with TBI receiving long term rehabi
litation services\n* Provide real-time video visits with family member
s\n* Provide video nursing supervision of patients with TBI in their h
ome\n* Manage medication and provide for an online response system\n*
Provide cognitive therapy, speech, and physical therapy in distance or
rural areas\n* Provide interactive video programs and web courses to
train medics, physician assistants, nurses, and other providers in civ
ilian and military settings\n\nFor more information visit https://medt
