SUMMARY:Webinar On \"Measurement Systems Analysis\"
DESCRIPTION:\nDescription :\n\nCalibration of gages and instruments is
a familiar activity whose purpose is to determine whether the gages i
n question return, on average, the same dimensions as the standards ag
ainst which they are calibrated. This is required by ISO 9001. Calibra
tion does not, however, ensure or even measure precision; the consiste
ncy with which the gages return the dimension in question. This is the
purpose of measurement systems analysis (MSA), or gage reproducibilit
y and repeatability (R&R). Objective of the webinar :\nAttendees will
learn the rationale behind MSA, and also the generally accepted practi
ces for performing it. This material includes:\n\nUnderstanding the ef
fect of gage variation on outgoing quality and statistical process con
trol\nLearn how to quantify gage variation components.\nRepeatability
is variation inherent to the gage and the measurement procedure.\nRepr
oducibility is variation due to differences in how inspectors perform
the measurement.\nThe total gage variation is a function of these two
variation sources (square root of the sum of the two variances).\n\n\n
Apply the standard procedure for a gage repeatability and reproducibil
ity study.\n\nLearn potential remedies for non-capable gages including
replication of measurements and guard banding.\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas Cover
ed in the Session :\n\nCalibration (comparison of the gage's average m
easurement of a standard's dimension against the standard's actual dim
ension) and precision (the gage's ability to return the same measureme
nt consistently) are two separate but important aspects of measurement
system performance.\nGage R&R refers to repeatability (variation inhe
rent to the gage, similar to common cause variation) and reproducibili
ty (variation due to differences between inspectors).\nGage variation
affects not only outgoing quality but also the power of SPC charts to
detect process shifts. It does not however increase the false alarm ri
sk for SPC charts.\nThe standard procedure for MSA includes minimum re
quirements for parts, inspectors, and replicated measurements. Readily
available software such as Minitab and StatGraphics can then identify
the variance components (repeatability and reproducibility) and overa
ll gage variation, and also perform tests for the adequacy of the stud
y.\n\nA table of the d*2 factors (necessary for performance of the cal
culations in Excel) will be provided.\n\n\n\n\nWho Will Benefit:\n\nMa
 nufacturing  engineers\nQuality engineers\nTechnicians\nInspectors wi
th responsibility for inspections that involve quantitative measuremen
 ts of parts.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Speaker:\nWilliam A. Levinson, P.E., FAS
Q, CFPIM, is the owner of Levinson Productivity Systems PC. He holds p
rofessional certifications from the American Society for Quality, APIC
S, and Society of Manufacturing Engineers.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more infor
