SUMMARY:Webinar on Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) Operations
DESCRIPTION:Overview: Many people believe that communications, naviga
tion, surveillance, and automation technologies are the elements of th
e complete ATC system when, in fact, they are simply the enabling tech
nologies that allow the air traffic control function to perform effici
ently and safely.\nThis topic goes into the various control positions
within a TRACON, the airspace allocation to each position, and the rol
e of the air traffic controllers as the streams of departure aircraft
and arrival aircraft cross both paths and altitudes. It also focuses o
n how air traffic controllers organize sequence, merge, and ensure sep
aration for the multiple aircraft approaching an airport to land from
multiple directions. Also discussed are the various types of approach
es that are commonly used in ATC. The topic also shows how the basic c
oncepts and procedures have been adapted to accommodate regions where
there are multiple major airports in close proximity. The \"bottom\" l
ine is to try to capture: (1) what a TRACON controller is trying to ac
complish, (2) how he/she is doing it, and (3) what the controller is t
hinking while he/she is doing it. It’s that internalized notion of w
hat it \"feels like\" to be a controller that is crucial to the unders
tanding of ATC and to the development of new and advanced ATC capabili
ties. Why should you Attend: \nIf you are a technical or management
person involved in developing new and/or advanced ATC technologies inv
olving TRACON operations, it is vital that you understand the fundamen
tal ATC operational procedures currently applied in the TRACON airspac
e and environment. Without such a personal understanding, it is much m
ore difficult to develop the successful and implementable new ideas an
d/or technologies that will advance TRACON operational efficiency and
safety. If you are a pilot, much of your ATC exposure and experience
will involve operating within TRACON airspace. Your experience will be
more intuitive and less frustrating with an understanding of what the
ATC system is trying to accomplish and how works. If you are simply i
nterested in aviation, an understanding of TRACON operations is fundam
ental. Areas Covered in the Session:\n\nCore TRACON operational conce
pts\nStandard and adapted airspace structures\nInternal airspace secto
rization\nStandard Departure and Arrival ATC procedures\nExamples of T
RACON operations\n\nWho Will Benefit:\n\nEngineers and other developer
s of ATC technologies and systems\nManagers and other aviation strateg
ic planners\nGovernment and industry aviation executives\nPilots\nAvia
 tion enthusiasts\n\nSpeaker Profile:\n\nStephen Alvania has 30 years
of experience with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. He is Cer
tified air traffic controller at an airport traffic control tower, a r
adar approach control, and an enroute ATC center, Led the development
and deployment of the national traffic flow management system. He has
worked as Technical research program manager for multiple advanced AT
C capabilities and he is FAA HQ ATC procedures specialist. \nContact
