The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

Colleagues,

As recently reported in Medical Device Developments ... MedTech-IQ member Marcus Dantus, CEO, ABDEO Medical, U.S. subsidiary of INNOVAMEDICA, is pioneering a transformative business model.

Faced with tighter financial constraints and the need to accelerate time-to-market, many companies are seeking lower cost venues to conduct high quality advanced medical technology engineering and product development. Due largely to the efforts of Dantus, Mexico is rapidly emerging as a favored destination for turnkey outsourced medical R&D.

By basing R&D activities in Mexico, ABDEO has carved out a significant competitive advantage. Considering that around "80% of a projects cost is comprised of its human resource, and due to the latest fluctuations in the exchange rate of the Mexican peso, a start-up could cut costs by half when doing R&D in Mexico", says Dantus.

According to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 24% of new university degrees awarded in Mexico are in science and engineering. A statistic that puts it on par with Canada, Austria and France. The growth rate of Mexico's business investment in R&D is second only to China.

ABDEO develops new medical devices with a highly qualified multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, scientists and medical specialists providing a wide range of R&D services. Dantus says that his objective is "to change the paradigm from made-in-Mexico to conceived-in-Mexico" , while fueling "a perception shift that improves Mexico's role as a generator of value".

ABDEO has built an entire ecosystem of support to address client needs from biomedical R&D, medical device manufacturing, clinical trials management and product testing. In addition, Mexico stands alongside China and Spain in offering favorable tax treatment for companies engaged in R&D.

All these advantages culminated in 2008 with ABDEO winning the Intel Award for its first spin-off - Critical Perfusion Inc. - based on its Impedance Spectroscopy Monitor (IMSO) technology.
