The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

Colleagues,

Had a chance to spend part of yesterday with the inexhaustable Neal Neuberger, Executive Director of the e-Health Policy Institute as he convened the first Capitol Hill "Steering Committee on Telehealth and Healthcare Informatics" of 2010 in the U.S.  Senate Dirksen Office Building.  The standing room only meeting featured speakers ranging from:

 Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island),
 C. Martin Harris, MD, Chief Information Officer, Cleveland Clinic,
Joel White, Executive Director, HIT Now Coalition,
Terry Hill, Executive Director, Rural Health Resource Center,
Hank Fanberg, Technology Advocacy, Christus Health
Liz Johnson, CIO & VP, Tenet Healthcare Corporation.

The focus of the meeting was on the $20 billion "HITECH Implementation Update and Status".  The specific focus was on the critical issue of "meaningful use", particularly in light of the fact that Electronic Health Records begin to garner financial incentives next year in 2011.

This Capitol Hill workshop took place only after Neal and Terry Hill had presided earlier over a meeting of the Rural Health Information Technology (HIT) Coalition, also in Washington, D.C..  At that meeting, Neal and Terry conducted an in depth analysis of the challenges and opportunities that the proposed "meaningful" use rules will have on  rural health care providers.
