MedTech I.Q.

The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

Colleagues,

As reported in Health Data Management ... Legislation introduced in the Senate would authorize millions of dollars to support specific programs to optimize the delivery of critical care and increase its workforce.

The bill, for example, calls for spending $5 million annually from 2010 through 2015 to expand use of telemedicine technologies to enable clinicians in rural facilities to remotely consult with critical care specialists.

The Patient-Focused Critical Care Enhancement Act also would authorize spending for the following programs:

* $5 million to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to research and report on best practices in critical care medicine, and

* $4 million for Medicare demonstration programs to assess methods to optimize the provision of critical care services and assistance programs to families.

Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) sponsor the bill, which soon will be available at congress.gov.
