BSEC 2010:  Annual ORNL Biomedical Science and Engineering Center Conference:  Biomedical Research and Analysis in Neuroscience
(BRAiN)

Location:  Oak Ridge National Laboratory,  Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Dates: May 25-26, 2010

Optional Date:  Pre-conference tour of ORNL: May 24, 2010

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Biomedical Science and Engineering Center (BSEC) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)  announces its annual conference.  This year’s theme focuses on Biomedical Research and Analysis
in Neuroscience (BRAiN), with emphasis on interdisciplinary, cross-cutting
research and applications in the areas of brain injury and neuroregeneration.
The conference goals are to:  1) identify cross-cutting, interdisciplinary tools
and applications needed by medical and scientific neuroscience communities in
the areas of brain injury (military and civilian) and neuro-regeneration, and 2)
facilitate the dialogue and collaborations necessary to address neuroscience
topics of national interest.

Papers and Posters are invited for the following topics:

1.      Neuroscience/Biomedical Informatics

a)      Data acquisition

b)      Data integration

c)      Data mining

d)      Data accessibility

e)      Multi-modal assessment

f)       computational data management and integration

  1. Computational Models for Neuroscience:

a)      Predictive models, mechanistic models

b)      Statistical models

c)      3D and 4D simulations and visualizations

d)      Models of behavioral outcomes

3.      Neuroscience Measurement and Imaging Science

a)      Imaging of the brain and neuro-anatomy

b)      Image processing and integration

c)      Diagnostic and detection devices

d)      Surgical and optical tools

4.      Neuroscience/Neuroanatomy:

a)      Sensory cortex

b)      Retinal neuroscience  (independent from the sensory cortex)

c)      Neuro-prosthetics

d)      Other relevant topics

Papers can be submitted electronically, using the link https://www.ornl.gov/bsec_conferences/2010/abstract_registration.cfm.   Papers will use the IEEE short form (4-page) format.  Paper Submission
Deadline: February 28, 2010.  Proceedings will
be published in IEEE Xplore.  Instructions for authors of posters and papers, as
well as important dates, are provided on the conference website.

All papers will be considered for both the presentation and the poster sessions.  Papers not selected for presentation, but deemed of good quality will be automatically accepted in the
poster session.  In addition, authors may choose to submit a paper just for the
poster session. Students (graduate and undergraduate) may submit papers only to
the poster session.

Please see the attached flyer and the conference website https://www.ornl.gov/bsec_conferences/2010/ for details.

We look forward to seeing you there.  Please forward this information to all colleagues and others who might be interested.

Best Regards,

Barbara Beckerman and Gary Alley

BSEC 2010 Conference News
Program Highlights
Paper Submission Deadline Extension

We have had a good response to our recent call for papers for the 2010 BSEC Conference, and the
agenda for the conference is really taking shape. With this in mind, we would like to make you aware
of some of the exciting discussions we will be having.

Due to recent additions to the program, we are extending the deadlines for paper submittals for the BSEC 2010 Conference to allow broader participation. Papers for both presentation and for the poster sessions will be accepted. We especially encourage students to submit papers for the poster session. Awards will be given for the Best Poster overall, and for the best Student Poster.

Program highlights:

Joseph Pancrazio, PhD
, Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program at George Mason
University, and formerly Neural Engineering Program Director in the National Institute of
Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) will be the keynote speaker.

We will have a fascinating patient-researcher perspective on the use of digital image
registration and three-dimensional reconstruction during diagnosis and treatment of
symptomatic hydrocephalus.

Nanomedicine research will be presented regarding the use of carbon nanofibers for
neural interfacing and targeted gene delivery.

Recent results from in vivo testing of neural stimulation using optical techniques based on
Infrared Neural Stimulation will be presented and discussed.

May 26th panel on brain injuries and neuroregeneration.

An optional tour of Oak Ridge National Laboratory Facilities is available on May 24th
including the Spallation Neutron Source, the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, the Graphite Reactor, and the National Center for Computational Sciences which houses the world’s fastest supercomputer and its enormous display, the Everest Powerwall.

Separate registration is required for this event.

Summary of revised dates:
Papers Submission Deadline March 28
Notification of Acceptance April 16
Last Date for Foreign National Registration March 31*
Last Date for U.S. Citizen Registration May 10
Final papers due May 16
Tour of Oak Ridge National Laboratory May 24
(Separate Registration Required)
BSEC 2010 Conference May 25-26
*Notice: Foreign National Registration Deadline is now before paper notification of
acceptance. This deadline does not pertain to current ORNL badge holders.
