important social media trends, stories and events of 2009. Part 2, which will hit your inbox Dec. 15, will take a look at what's in store for 2010.
2009 has been an exciting year for word-of-mouth and social-media marketers. It has been amazing to see how quickly things have grown and changed for everyone over the past several months.
As we enter a new decade, I think it's safe to say that even with all the maturity we've seen this year, we're still very much in the beginning of a new era in marketing. Here are my big trends from 2009:
Social media is now a "how" question for businesses, not an "if." Most brands have moved beyond the internal debate of if they should be involved in social media or not, and are moving on to consider how they will approach it. The early adopters have earned their early lead, but it might surprise you how quickly brands that started a little slow are catching up.
WOM is still the heart of it all. The new tools emerging with the explosion of social media are very exciting, but I love seeing how the fundamentals of great word-of-mouth marketing continue to drive the best programs out there today.
The world is a better place because of social media. When everyone has a voice, the brands that earn the respect and recommendation of their customers are winning out. We're witnessing some fantastic companies -- the ones that treat their customers with honesty and respect -- building a momentum that will not only carry them through this economic hiccup, but also make them unstoppable when things turn back around.
Ethics and honesty won out. Ethical, honest marketers got a big endorsement from the FTC with the release of its new rules on disclosure. While there's nothing really new in the FTC's language, it now puts some legal backing behind all the recommendations the good guys have been pushing for months. While the legal language tends to trip people up, the overall rules are pretty simple: If you're out to trick and scam people, you're going to get busted. If you're doing honest work and you're properly training your team, you've got nothing to worry about.…

accessible in a world in which data increasingly is born, stored and used in digital formats...The report, titled “Harnessing the Power of Digital Data for Science and Society,” calls for development of interagency and agency-specific policies for the management of data produced by or for government throughout its life cycle
Characteristics of the current digital data landscape are described in the report as:
* The starting points for new research increasingly are digital and their products increasingly are born digital.
* Innovations in digital technology are driving the exploding volumes and rising demand for data.
* All sectors of society are stakeholders in digital preservation and access.
* A comprehensive framework for cooperation to manage the preservation of digital data is missing.
The goal of the report’s recommendations is to bring together the increasing volumes of digital data with the people who will be using and taking advantage of it. It lays out a vision and a strategy for achieving it. The vision is to “create a comprehensive framework of transparent, evolvable, extensible policies and management and organizational structures that provide reliable, effective access to the full spectrum of public digital scientific data...
