The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration
We have tried the Kindle for use with medical students, and as Dr. Kim suggests the gray tones do not work for medical illustration. However, the bigger problem that we found was having medical textbook publishers move their titles to e-reader format with pictures. When we tested, very few publishers had e-editions of the necessry medical textbooks. The problem should be bigger today because there are now more e-formats.
In our testing, when we were able to find an e-version of a medical textbook (again our testing was with the Kindle), pictures were absent from the e-editions that were present in the printed editions. Another problem was that pictures were not placed in the e-editions in context to the print. The e-edition photos were placed in places that did not make logical sense which we believed was tied to the conversion process.
If we are going to ask e-publishers to provide us with e-books, we should provide them with direction and incentive to make this happen. No field requires the advantages of an e-reader more than the medical field.
