The American Red Cross is making it easy to get the latest news on recovery efforts in Haiti through exciting new applications for some popular mobile phones.New free applications are now available for iPhone,

Blackberry, Android and Windows Mobile cell phone platforms. Downloading the new apps allows users to stay updated on how the American Red Cross is helping in Haiti through a real-time newsfeed, and by connecting to popular American Red Cross social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter.

Users can also help support the relief and recovery efforts by donating via text, phone or Web.The official Red Cross Haiti Relief iPhone application which is available at no cost through the iTunes App store, was developed through a partnership with Clearwave Mobile. Also ready, and available at no cost, is an application developed by Whoop for those who use the Blackberry, Android, and Windows Mobile platforms, which can be downloaded on a mobile device via http://redcross.whoopapp.mobi/.90999“We are so grateful for the astounding outpouring of support through our Haiti texting program,” said Peggy Dyer, Chief Marketing Officer for the American Red Cross. “These new applications build on that momentum, giving users a whole new way to stay connected to the Red Cross.”Users can read the latest developments in the recovery , see first-hand what it is like in the devastated Caribbean nation through American Red Cross photo essays, and learn about what other Red Cross societies from around the globe are doing to help the people of Haiti. They can also join the millions of people who have texted “Haiti” to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the Red Cross since the earthquake hit Haiti on January 12. The $10 donations made through mobile giving can provide a first aid kit equipped with enough ointment and bandages for a Red Cross responder to treat as many as 20 injured earthquake survivors. Or $10 can provide a family with two water cans to store clean drinking water, basic first aid supplies, or a blanket appropriate for the Haitian climate. The relief effort in Haiti is already the largest single-country relief operation in global Red Cross history in terms of emergency relief teams deployed. The number of teams in or en route to Haiti is greater than the number that responded to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which spanned 14 countries.
