The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) funded OSEHRA was launched last fall and now has over 900 software developers, programmers and researchers using its online platform to accelerate the development of open source health information technologies. The OSEHRA homepage, http://www.osehra.org/home, provides instant access to the following open source electronic health record development resources for free.

Janus 4.0 Graphical User Interface Launched As Open Source Software
Arlington, Virginia – OSEHRA, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating innovation in health care information technology, today announced the availability of Janus 4.0, an open source web-based application that presents to clinicians a common real-time view of patient information from multiple Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
“Enabling broad access to innovative clinician-facing applications is critical to the evolution of EHR technology,” said Dr. Seong Ki Mun, CEO of OSEHRA. “Making Janus available to the open source community is an important part of that effort.”
Janus originated as part of a DoD/VA interoperability program launched by the Pacific Telehealth & Technology Hui and was further supported by the Pacific Joint Information Technology Center, both of which were formed with the encouragement and support of Senator Daniel K. Inouye (HI). Hawaii Resource Group LLC, the developer of Janus 4.0, provided the open source license for the Janus software.
“The Janus software project is a fine example of the close collaboration between government and industry that yields the best possible care for our service members and veterans,” said Senator Inouye. “By making electronic health record software widely available, we have the opportunity to improve health care outcomes for all citizens.”
“Innovation in the delivery of high quality health care to soldiers, veterans, and their families depends on our ability to rapidly innovate the technology that underpins that care,” said Peter Levin, Senior Advisor to the Secretary and Chief Technology Officer at VA. “Open source software, embodied in applications such as Janus, is foundational to our innovation strategy.”
Janus provides the capability to gather patient information from separate EHR systems and present it to clinicians in one integrated view. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Defense have deployed the Janus user interface at the VA Pacific Islands Health Care System/Tripler Army Medical Center and in clinics at the James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, a joint medical facility in North Chicago, Illinois, where it provides clinicians with a common view of patient medical information from both VA and DoD EHR systems.
“The Janus user interface provides the basis for a common clinical presentation layer across VA and DoD systems,” said Dr. Barclay Butler, director of the jointly-managed DoD/VA Interagency Program Office, which is developing the next-generation integrated Electronic Health Record. “It is an important open source building block that we build on as we evolve our common health record system.”
