Brandon Winchester, MD, anesthesiologist at Duke University School of Medicine, set out to accomplish the unprecedented in medical education when he and his colleague, Stuart Grant, MB ChB founded DOCSTREAM Inc. The company's proprietary product, DOCSTREAM.COM provides clinicians with a web-based community to upload or watch live or on-demand videos of medical procedures. Because the site is only for medical professionals, the company has incorporated IDology's identity verification solutions in its membership approval process as a way of eliminating fraud risks within the site.
"DOCSTREAM.COM is a content specific, highly organized site that allows only medical professionals to add, search, rate and share medical video footage with other professionals in the field," says Winchester. "To avoid the risk of fraud and allowing the wrong people access to the site, we needed a robust identification process, which is why we chose IDology. They provide a practical, efficient and simple solution that is going to be the main key in allowing us to stream videos to a controlled audience."
Initially, the basic framework of the site is visible to anyone, but once the PLAY button on a video or live stream is clicked, or someone indicates they want to create an account, identity verification is initiated. Those signing up for an account go through DOCSTREAM's initial screening process to determine that they are a clinician. Once someone's claimed identity is validated as a medical professional, the person is then verified as who they are claiming to be using multiple choice questions dynamically generated by IDology's ExpectID IQ solution. These questions are designed so that only the individual being verified will know the correct answer. Using IDology, DOCSTREAM.com is able to stop unauthorized users from accessing medical content while also protecting its members from identity theft and fraud.
"Becoming a YouTube type of site for medical professionals has implications and risks associated with patient privacy and HIPPA compliance," says John Dancu, CEO of IDology. "Our solutions help DOCSTREAM minimize their risks by providing a validated, trusted community for all those involved."
Donny Lofland, Chief IT Architect of DOCSTREAM.COM and Lee Pierce, Chieft Designer of DOCSTREAM.COM developed the site that will initially stream live and recorded surgeries and procedures relative to orthopedics and anesthesiolgoy. The site will officially launch this fall and will quickly expand to include many other types of medical procedures including, general surgery, interventional radiology, cardiology, gynecology-oncology, and ophthalmology.
