The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology has just published its report, "University-Private Sector Research Partnerships in the Innovation Ecosystem". It is very much consistent with the Triple Helix strategies we have consistently advocated at MedTechIQ. Dear Mr. President:

We are pleased to send you the report, University-Private Sector Research Partnerships in the
Innovation Ecosystem, prepared by your Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).
This report provides an overview of the U.S. research and development (R&D) enterprise and focuses on the critical role for university-private sector research partnerships, their potential to improve research and innovation, and the obstacles standing in the way of further progress.

The Council has previously reviewed a number of elements related to R&D investments, technology development and transfer, and Federal-State collaboration. PCAST is particularly concerned by a number of trends that are impacting U.S. competitiveness. This includes the inability to meet growing funding demands resulting from increased university research facilities and personnel. Additionally, we have observed a decrease in the number and size of industrial basic research laboratories. PCAST believes enhancing engagement of the private sector, including companies and foundations, with researchers in academia and government laboratories is increasingly vital to the health of the U.S. R&D enterprise and our technology-based economy....
