In support of Schimpff's identification of the OR of the Future in his megatrends, the Council of Gynecologic Endoscopy of the AAGL, has begun identifying Centers of Excellence of Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG), hospitals with MIS surgeons who meet rigorous criteria supported by outcomes data. Patient safety and reduced costs from MIS practice are the principal drivers. The role of surgical simulators for learning and maintaining surgical skills is well established, and is promoted by SAGES, SLS, and the ACS.
What's new are virtual hospitals wherein teams of MDs and RNs practice safely to manage dynamic virtual patients requiring critical care. If failing timely resuscitation, the team can at least practice defibrillation protocols. An example is available at http://www.indusgeeks.com/ClinispaceWalkthrough_09.06.10.mp4
