Please see this fascinating 13 minute video from CBS's 60 Minutes, on how the mysterious Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the 2d richest medical foundation in the world (the Gates Foundation is #1), came to be. What a story!

I think you will find it interesting, and a good example of how creative financing can make an enormous difference.
