Event Description

Overview:

This lecture will help business owners, and specifically health care business and practice owners learn to look beyond the candidate resume. It is all well and good to select candidates that have the right credentials and experience for a position, but there is much more that must be considered when adding a new employee to your practice.

For example, if those candidates will not mesh well with other members of your practice or if they will not have enough work available to them to keep them happy in their new position - hiring the candidate may be a disaster from day one.

Employers must be careful to consider broader issues when hiring without considering any aspects of the candidate that an employer may be prohibited from considering under the law.

The presenter will go over important factors to consider when hiring a candidate that go beyond credentials and experience while still staying well within the bounds of permissible considerations under the law. For example, does the candidate have a similar practice philosophy as the employer? Are there enough offices, supplies and support staff to support another practitioner?

Attendees will receive an overview of how federal laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, affects every aspect of hiring and firing from job advertisement, to selecting a candidate, to work environment and to ultimate termination of the employment relationship, should that occur. Moreover, attendees will learn about how restrictive covenants can affect not only who they hire but who they fire.

The presenter will also discuss how HIPAA and OSHA affect employees in the medical practice as well as what special background checks can, and should, be done on potential clinical employees before they join the practice.

Finally, should the need to terminate an employee occur, a practice's best defense to any claim of wrongdoing is a good offense. The presenter will go over documentation skills for employee records and best practices for termination procedures.

Why should you Attend: Being a business owner of any type of business is a challeng. Owning and running a business with employees only increases that challenge. Owning and running a health care business with health care employees and non-clinical employees adds another layer to all of these basic business challenges.

Hiring in a health care business not only requires the employer to make sure he or she is abiding by employment laws but also taking into consideration state and local licensing laws and laws regarding permissible structure for medical and health care practices. There are significant federal and state laws and regulations that apply to all businesses and several that apply only to health care businesses.
