My bona fides:
1) I'm a technophile, not a technologist
2) I have had a love-hate relationship with Apple™, going back to 1987. Be it the PowerBook, the iPod, or the iPhone, Apple's entry into a market-space is not merely a game changer, but more elemental, a market "definer". The Apple user experience is truly nonpareil. That said, the company has historically been driven by proprietary closed systems that inhibit/punish any collaboration from "unapproved" sources.
3) I think it beyond argument that the iPhone has set the bar for mobile telephony & convergent technologies
4) Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery; to date the iPhone competition just seems 'wannabee'.
The latter two statements may soon require revision. Google has been developing its Android platform for cell telephony with an open source SDK and a Linux core. Its approach couldn't be more different from that of Apple. Time will tell if the proverbial wisdom of "mass collaboration" prevails. Regardless of outcome, it all promises to be a fun spectator sport.
Note: A number of videos from Google have recently posted. I'm adding a few to our social network. Others are available. Check out
Android Developers on YouTube for a more comprehensive look at the Android platform.
