A message to all members of MedTechIQ

Colleagues,

As reported in Cleveland Plain Dealer...Cleveland Clinic announced Top 10 high impact medical technologies for 2009. They are:

10. National health information exchange: Comprehensive system for electronic health records linking patients, doctors, hospitals, and payers.

9. Doppler-guided uterine artery occlusion: Experimental procedures that use things like tiny plugs and sound waves to starve fibroid tumors in the uterus so they get smaller or disappear.

8. Integration of diffusion tensor imaging: Technology that creates two- and three-dimensional color images of the fiber pathways in the brain.

7. LESS and NOTES applications: Laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) pairs minimally invasive surgery with a single incision in the patient's belly button. Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) is incision-less surgery through a natural orifice, such as the mouth, vagina or colon.

6. New strategies for creating vaccines for avian flu: New approach uses a mock version of the virus to trigger an immune response that protects a person from the virus.

5. Percutaneous mitral valve regurgitation repair: This procedure is an alternative to open-heart surgery for extremely ill patients to repair a leaky mitral valve in the heart.

4. Multi-spectral imaging systems:
Imaging systems attached to standard microscopes enable pathologists to see up to 5 stained proteins at a time.

3. Diaphragm pacing system: Electric device that stimulates the diaphragm to contract and relax, enabling paralyzed patients to breathe.

2. Warm organ perfusion device: These devices pump warm blood through a donor heart, keeping it viable for up to 12 hours.

1. Use of circulating tumor cell technology: Technology that measures tumor cells circulating in blood & used to adjust treatments in patients with repeat cancer.
