The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

Colleagues,

As reported in Government Health IT ... Maj. Jack Leech, a medical command and control officer at the Bagram Airbase, about 30 miles north of Afghan capital, Kabul notes, “The terrain in Afghanistan poses significant challenges for some of our point of injury missions. Everyone is committed to treating the casualties as far forward as possible while (evacuating) them to the appropriate level of care as quickly as we can.”

The goal of Medical Communications for Combat Casualty Care (MC4), the Army organization that provides theater electronic medical tools, is to sustain and enhance operational support.

“This will be particularly relevant when unit surges occur,” said Lt. Col. William Geesey, the MC4 program manager. “In Afghanistan, travel restrictions and large distances between medical treatment facilities have historically challenged our deployed systems administrators and trainers.”

Longer distances between battle zones and care stations could make documenting medical evacuations even more critical in Afghanistan than in Iraq. Yet medevac teams have had trouble capturing and accessing data on wounded troops under their care.
