MedTech I.Q.

The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

Colleagues,

Please see today's excellent bi-monthly iCons in Medicine newsletter.

In this month's issue you will find features on:

- MedTech-IQ member, Rifat Latifi, MD, iCons in Medicine Advisory Board Member, clinical professor of surgery at The University of Arizona, and trauma surgeon who has been named the international health adviser to the prime minister of Kosova.

- MedTech-IQ member, Jonathan Linkous, iCons in Medicine member and the CEO of the ATA (American Telemedicine Association). Jon talks about how Intel, a member of the ATA, is poised to take a key role in the advancement of home monitoring devices. These devices allow patients and their physicians to track their conditions without requiring frequent clinic or hospital visits.

iCons in Medicine is a global telehealth and humanitarian medicine volunteer alliance. The structure of iCons in Medicine is similar to that of a virtual Community of Practice (vCoP) - a space unbounded by geography or ideology, where technology allows healthcare providers of all disciplines to connect with each other and with those in need worldwide. Individuals, organizations, and agencies taking part in iCons in Medicine are able to share knowledge and collaborate through the iCons in Medicine website. This site enables participants to post profiles of themselves, their organizations, and their practice areas and encourages members to interact through forums, messaging, chat rooms, and other tools. The site collates information on areas of interest and expertise, bringing together practitioners with relevant knowledge and skills and facilitating a vibrant online community.

The iCons in Medicine newsletter also includes up to date information on Health IT, Global Health, Grants and Funding, Upcoming Meetings and Member Publications.

The primary focus of iCons in Medicine is iConsult, a teleconsultation program that empowers healthcare providers in remote and medically underserved areas by making medical knowledge available to them at the point of care. Through the Internet, iConsult connects healthcare providers (Requestors) with a network of committed specialty physicians (Volunteers) who provide expertise, encouragement, and advice on difficult cases. The service is free, and allows access to a network of specialty physicians around the world.

iCons in Medicine was founded by MedTech-IQ member, William Smith, and MedTech-IQ member, Deborah Ervine, Communications & Website, iCons in Medicine, edits the newsletter.
