The Seattle-based global health organization PATH raised nearly $3 million in gifts from private donors in 2008, a 37 percent increase from the year before.

Most of PATH’s $250 million annual budget comes from grants awarded by foundations and government agencies, the largest being the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The private donor group increased in 2008 to about 1,700 individuals, companies and foundations, which was a record for PATH. In 2007 it raised about $2.1 million from 1,587 such donors.

About two-thirds of the donated money will go into PATH’s Catalyst Fund, which is used to fund potential breakthroughs in health technologies.
