As reported in Washington Business Journal ... The Maryland Technology Development Corp., known as Tedco, has awarded a total of $599,934 to help fund 12 local technology companies.

The money was granted in collaboration with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and the Frederick County Office of Economic Development through the Ft. Detrick Technology Transfer Initiative.

The purpose of the program is to raise awareness of new technologies and fund them to transition for follow-on funding in the market place. The companies range from telemedicine and eHealth companies to biotechnology firms. Many of the companies are spin-outs from local academic & government labs in Maryland. A perfect example of the "Triple Helix" of academic, industry, government collaboration at work.

The companies awarded funding include:

* APE-Bridgepath Scientific Inc. in Frederick: The company is developing a technology called the GeNova Screen to identify, isolate, and produce antibody-like molecules.

* Aid Networks in Rockville: The company is developing a health care technology called miTag system, which is a scalable wireless sensor solution for improving patient flow.

* Bacilligen Inc. in Rockville: The company is developing an on-demand biotech products including a combination vaccine against plague and anthrax.

* BioAssay Works LLC in Ijamsville: The company is developing a lateral-flow visual diagnostic test to detect and differentiate single sample multiple pathogenic poxviruses, including variola, vaccinia, and monkeypox.

* Biomedica Management Corp in Catonsville: The company is safety-testing a medical product called ClotFoam, which is a non-compressible, intracavitary hemostatic agent.

* CynerGene IDMP in Frederick: The company is developing, validating and implementing a supplemental diagnosis of Malaria, HIV, and Dengue using its Infectious Disease Multiplex Panel approach, which could allow for creation of biosensors.

* DS-Byte Solutions LLC in Baltimore: The company is developing required components and system framework to enable conversational interfaces for telemedicine tools. Such tools would allow professional medics to use voice, gesture, and other human-- computer interactions to access and document information in electronic medical records.

* HeMemics Biotechnologies Inc. in Rockville: The company is developing technology to preserve mammalian cells in dried format that can easily be re-hydrated for a variety of uses.

* Imagilin Technology LLC in Frederick: The company is evaluating the effect of Imagilin patented probiotics as a food supplement to enhance the immune responsiveness of guinea pigs upon immunization or challenge with virulent pathogens. The evaluation will suggest the ability of Imagilin patented probiotics to enhance the immunization of a vaccine.

* Intelligent Substrates Inc. in Baltimore: The company is developing micropatterned substrates for viral infectivity assays.

* Juxtopia in Baltimore: The company is customizing its Wearable Assistance and Situational Awareness (WASA) goggles and service to allow U.S. Army combat medics to access and document information to electrical medical records via hands-free voice-requests and voice-responses.

* Theradigm, Inc. in Baltimore: The company is developing cell therapies to treat brain and spinal cord injuries.
