The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONCHIT) has approved plans for the first 3 States to begin implementing regional Health Information Exchanges (HIE)s using funds from the federal stimulus package ...


The States are:


Maryland

The Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients, or CRISP -- will build the Maryland statewide HIE and function as the Regional Extension Center (REC) ... To date, Maryland and its partners in academia and the not-for-profit sector have secured nearly $25 million for expansion of health IT and development of the health IT workforce ... In April, CRISP selected the health IT company Axolotl to provide the infrastructure for the exchange ... In May, MedTech-IQ member, Zane Networks (Luigi Leblanc and Alexandra Jellerette), were selected as the first Management Service Organization (MSO) certified to assist 7,907 physician practices and other health care providers in the selection of EHRs and linking to the HIE ...


New Mexico

The New Mexico Health Information Collaborate received $7 million to build the state's HIE.  The Collaborative, has 1 million individuals in its database and the cooperation of more than 10 hospitals, two major medical groups and two medical laboratories...The online network will be supported by Centergy Data Exchange Service from MedPlus, a health IT subsidiary of Quest Diagnostics ... The exchange will work with New Mexico's regional health IT extension center ... Over the next two years, the state aims to connect 1,000 health care providers through the health
IT projects ...


Utah

The not-for-profit Utah Health Information Network has been tasked with developing the state's Clinical Health Information Exchange (cHIE) ...  60% of Utah's doctors use electronic medical records, about two-times the national average.  And many of those doctors, and all the state's hospitals, have already joined the cHIE ... Most of the $15.8 million the state has received in federal grant money will go toward helping small clinics and health care provider offices implement EHR systems and connect with the health data exchange ...
