The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

Colleagues,

As reported in Government Health IT ... A major portion of the $400 million allocated as part of the stimulus legislation to the Office of the Secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services for patient-centered Comparative Effectiveness Research should go towards building a more effective data infrastructure for sharing and analyzing information, according to a federal report published today...

Current data sources are fragmented and limited, no-one knows exactly what existing databases contain, and there is no easy way of searching across those databases to extract information about patient-centered research, otherwise known as comparative effectiveness research (CER).

... The report will be part of the input Sebelius will use to form an operational plan for CER, which she has to submit by July 30. ... In order to meet future needs, investment should be made in linking current data sources, in developing distributed data networks, and in partnerships with the private sector, the report said...

... Other recommendations included research focusing on the needs of priority populations such as racial and ethnic minorities, person with disabilities, and children and the elderly, as well as research in those areas that would have particularly high impact on health care.
