As reported in iHealthBeat...Lawmakers reached an agreement on a $789.5 billion economic recovery package that includes $19 billion for health IT, the Wall Street Journal reports (Hitt/Weisman, Wall Street Journal, 2/12).

The compromise stimulus bill would provide temporary Medicare and Medicaid bonus payments ranging from $44,000 to $64,000 for physicians and up to $11 million for hospitals for meaningful use of electronic health records (Manos, Healthcare IT News, 2/12).

The measure also includes Medicare payment penalties for physicians and hospitals that do not use EHRs by 2014 (Wall Street Journal, 2/12).

The proposed package would codify the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. It also directs the national coordinator for health IT to lead an open and transparent process to develop by 2010 standards that allow for secure nationwide electronic exchange of health data...
