As reported in the Los Angeles Business Journal ... The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded ... a $15.7 million contract to Northrop Grumman Corp. and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas to develop an open-access national online database and analysis resource center for the study of viruses....

... The database is designed to help scientists combat viruses that cause hepatitis, encephalitis, smallpox, acute respiratory distress and dengue fever, as well as newly emerging pathogenic viruses.

The new database, which will be called the Virus Pathogen Database and Analysis Resource, also known as ViPR, will enable researchers to compile information on a wider range of viral pathogens, including the causative agents of herpes and chicken pox, hepatitis C, West Nile viruses, and smallpox...
