The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

Colleagues,

As reported in iHealthbeat...State governments should begin to determine the best regulatory and governance framework to support and advance health IT and health information exchange, according to a new report prepared for the State Alliance for e-Health by the University of Massachusetts Medical School...The report, titled "Public Governance Models for a Sustainable Health Information Exchange Industry," states that effective health IT and health data exchange adoption by states will help improve and reform the U.S. health care system.

The report offers the following three conceptual models for public governance that could lead to the practice of sustainable health data exchange:

* Government-Led Electronic Health Data Exchange -- The government has direct provision of the electronic health data exchange infrastructure and oversight of its use.
* Electronic Health Information Exchange Public Utility With Strong Government Oversight -- The public sector serves an oversight role and regulates private-sector provision of the health data exchange.
* Private-Sector Led Electronic Health Information Exchange With Government Collaboration -- The government collaborates and advises as a stakeholder in the private-sector provision of the electronic health data exchange.
