As reported in iHealthBeat...In early 2009, the Social Security Administration will begin using the Nationwide Health Information Network to access health records held by a private health information exchange, NHIN planners and SSA officials announced Tuesday.

SSA will use NHIN to tap into records held by MedVirginia, a health information exchange based in Richmond, Va., and verify disability claims. Before accessing the records, SSA will have to indicate to MedVirginia that patients have authorized the agency to access their medical information.
