A message to all members of MedTechIQ
Colleagues,
Key points: Future Delivery of Medicine: 2020, University College of London, 5 November 2008
1. TECHNOLOGY & PROCESSES
Convergence - Of disparate technologies in biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostic equipment, bioinformatics, medical imaging & other fields.
Genomics - By 2020 every patient will have genome sequenced, driving improvements in diagnosis & treatments, paving the way to personalised medicine
Prevention & Early detection - of disease with biomarkers & other diagnostic devices.
Patient Self-monitoring -In parallel, less invasive treatments
Clinical Studies – Hospital data & outcomes for every patient will be captured & analysed
2. MONEY
Finance – Funding needed for basic research, seed funding for start-ups, venture finance for commercialisation.
Value – Advanced treatments may be expensive – but they will lead to cost savings elsewhere.
Venture Capitalists - and other investors – Must embrace & help drive the vision.
3. PEOPLE
Technology Transfer – Must be real links between universities & industry & patients.
Personalised Medicine - Put patients at the centre, let them decide if they want to take risk of a trial, or treatment.
Data Protection, Privacy & Management - Biobanks & data repositories are at the heart – need to look at ownership of data, how transmitted, how large datasets are managed.
Partnership – Public needs to be consulted, particularly younger people
Healthcare Profession – With support from expert systems & monitoring, healthcare will become more formulaic. Clinical judgements will be open to people with less expert training.
4. GLOBAL TRENDS
Aging Populations – Increasing burden of chronic diseases.
Health Inequality – Not only in developing countries, but also from one developed country to another.
Regulators – Need for harmonisation of regulatory authorities worldwide.
