Military Health System to assess alternative strategies to electronic health record - AHLTA

In a recent edition of the Government Health IT, "What's Brewin", JULY 21, 2008, Bob Brewin reports that the Military Health System (MHS) plans to make a decision in the next week on developing an alternative for its electronic health record system, the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA). In an interview with Dr. S. Ward Casscells, assistant secretary of Defense for health affairs, Brewin notes that the MHS is seeking an alternative to AHLTA to address feedback from MHS users that find difficulty in using the system has become a big issue for military clinicians, ranking above treatment for troops suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

This is the same expirience my medical collegues report. Has anyone told the politicians that "it ain't happening yet". I can't believe that the goverment is hinting at forcing physicians to purchase EMR for some future return on their investment. I will never pay a dime to pay for this system. They will even have to pay for uploading my records to an internet based system set up by the government. An Internet based system is the only sensible solution. Is google or anyone else on this?
