Colleagues,
Interesting article posted in the Wall Street Journal Blog, http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/10/15/build-a-better-health-care-system-win-10-million/#comment-323079. It appears that the X PRIZE Foundation, the nation’s pre-eminent philanthropic organization focused on innovation through competition & the WellPoint Foundation, are initiating a $10 million bounty to generate new mechanisms to address the health care system challenges in the U.S.
As part of this groundbreaking collaboration, WellPoint and the X PRIZE Foundation will solicit participation from employers, health care providers, consumers, government partners and any other interested parties to develop competition guidelines that reflect the health care industry’s most pressing challenges.
The X PRIZE Foundation is an educational nonprofit prize institute whose mission is to create radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity. The Foundation has previously made $10 million awards for sub-orbital flight, lunar exploration, rapid human genome sequencing and a 100 mpg car.
This effort connects nicely with our earlier MedTechIQ post, last month, on "Innovation Economics", http://medtechiq.ning.com/profiles/blog/show?id=2140535%3ABlogPost%3A3364.
It appears that major players in industry, government & civil society are ready to embrace emerging "Triple Helix" frameworks to incentivize systemic technological & business process change. The X PRIZE award, competition rules and guidelines are expected to be finalized in early 2009. Interesting & ENJOY!
