As reported in Investor's Business Daily ... The world's No. 1 chipmaker is teaming up with industrial giant General Electric (GE) in a five-year, $250 million health care alliance to design and sell devices to help the elderly and people with chronic illness who live at home.
The companies didn't detail how they plan to spend the money or divide research efforts.
But as leaders in their respective industries, they may have an advantage as they bet big on the fast-growing home-medical market.
GE is already a medical-device giant with $18 billion in sales, competing with Philips (PHG) and Siemens (SI), among others.
Intel, meanwhile, is far and away the biggest chipmaker, with 2008 sales of $37.6 billion.
