MedTech I.Q.

The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

This group will examine how systems engineering can improve healthcare delivery. A key document for this is the report published in 2005 jointly by the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine titled: BUILDING A BETTER DELIVERY SYSTEM - A New Engineering/Health Care Partnership
http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=11378&page=R1

As the authors state: "The goal ... is to transform the U.S. health care sector from an underperforming conglomerate of independent entities (individual practitioners, small group practices, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, community health centers, et al.) into a high-performance “system” in which every participating unit recognizes its dependence and influence on every other unit."

The goal of this Systems Engineering Group in MedTech IQ is to examine this issue further and to identify tools that can help us move in this direction. One such tool that immediately comes to mind is the Medical Device "Plug-and-Play" Interoperability Program created by Julian M. Goldman, MD. http://mdpnp.org/Home_Page.html

I look forward to a lively and stimulating discussion will you in this area.
