Kitware's New Approach to Quantify Risk of Developing Lung Cancer published in Academic Radiology

Colleagues,

Thank you to MedTech-IQ member, Rick Avila of Kitware, Inc. for this heads up on early findings regarding a new approach his company is pioneering to quantitatively measure lung cancer risk. Rick, Kitware’s Senior Director of Healthcare Solutions, was the lead investigator on the research. Expect to see press releases similar to below on these development ...

" Kitware announces today the first published report of a new and quantitative method for measuring lung cancer risk within the July issue of Academic Radiology. The paper provides a multi-disciplinary scientific literature rationale and preliminary study data showing that increased calcification at upper airway bifurcations, when combined with pulmonary function test scores, can be used to estimate an individual’s risk of developing lung cancer."

Note that there is a research link between Give A Scan and the lung cancer risk research. As a result, LCA (Lung Cancer Alliance) has also made a statement which will be a press release tomorrow:

and the story was picked up by auntminnie:

I expect another radiology news story, with interviews, to be released
soon.

I am hopeful that the paper helps us eventually make a paradigm shift in
how we manage lung cancer. We need to have the right tools to measure,
manage, and prevent carcinogenic lung damage, rather than waiting for
first evidence of a primary lung cancer lesion to take action.

- Rick
