The Cutting Edge of Medical Technology Content, Community & Collaboration

Overview

Haptic technology refers to technology that interfaces to the user via the sense of touch by applying forces, i.e., vibrations and/or motions, to the user. This mechanical stimulation may be used to assist in the creation of virtual objects, objects existing only in a computer simulation, for control of such virtual objects, and to enhance the remote control of robotic machines and devices.

Haptics are gaining widespread acceptance as a key part of virtual reality systems, adding the sense of touch to previously visual only solutions. Most of these solutions are stylus based, where the user interfaces to the virtual world via a tool or stylus, giving a form of interaction that is computationally realistic on today's hardware. Virtual dentistry uses a drill look alike, virtual surgery mimics various surgical instruments.

This emerging technology promises to have wide reaching applications. Our client is seeking patent portfolio additions in multiple areas of medical simulation, endovascular, intravenous access and custom designed simulation. However, they are also active in applying haptic technologies to consumer electronics, mobile phones, industrial processes and 3D interaction.

I have 6 haptics patents with Laerdal, but as you may know, Immersion Corporation's business model is to file somewhere around 700 haptics patents, and then sue anyone who is using the patent. For example, Microsoft and Sony have benn sued by them. However, Immersion lost out big recently when Microsoft sued them over breach of settlement...Immersion is basically a law firm.
