On April 2009, my sister's belly seemed to grow larger and larger by the day. She could feel sharp pains on her stomach. So we recommended her to go see a doctor. And when the tests were finished she was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian cancer. We were so shocked. The doctor told us to prepare quite a lefty amount of money for the 6-month chemotherapy. We did all we could for my sister. When her chemo session started, she experienced nausea, headaches, lack of appetite, and more. It was…

While most of the discussion over public health these days surrounds the Congressional debate over health care reform, there are a number of advances in health care that have already been made, and could be further implemented with an increase in broadband access and adoption.
High-speed Internet access creates several advantages for both doctors and their patients. Patients can create a personal health file online that can be accessed by their primary doctors, specialists or…

Please see the link below for one example of how to measure the impact of an individuals publications, scientific collaborations, partnerships, scholarly output, quality of work, etc. The criteria used here is based on the network of collaborations that result, how many people one works with or brings into his or her specific arena of research (“Integrated semantic community platform). Clearly, the impact of a scientist’s work is more than simply the number of Google “hits”!.…

Yes indeed. I remember it well. 22 November 1989 (10:15 AM). My first of six Congressional testimonies. Waxing poetic on the sorry state of Federal preparedness and response to disasters (this was just after both the catastrophic earthquakes in Armenia and San Francisco (Loma Prieta or "World Series" quake). If I had to give the same testimony today, there would be very little that I would change. Sad. But true. But it was the first real break in my "disastrous" career:…

New methods of studying avian influenza strains and visually mapping their movement around the world will help scientists more quickly learn the behavior of the pandemic H1N1 flu virus, Ohio State University researchers say. The researchers linked many powerful computer systems together to analyze enormous amounts of genetic data collected from all publicly available isolated strains of the H5N1 virus --…

If you still think YouTube is just for those durned kids, you're really missing out. We at FierceHealthcare have decided to present seven of our favorite healthcare videos, with topics ranging from the serious (a critique of U.S. public health efforts in controlling H1N1) to the purely silly (an anesthesiologist singing about his duty to "sit and listen to the beep.")
For their creativity, educational value and pure passion, we hereby deem these videos Fierce! Have fun checking them…
